Best relic(er) refinishes in the U.K.?

What's Hot
Seen a few old threads about some decent remixers in the U.K. (mainly SC relics). Just wondered if there were now any other options?

I'd imagine Clive Brown - his relic work is world-famous. Generally works on proper vintage pieces though, and not cheap.

My tele was refinished by @iamf68 and I'm really pleased with the result and he was a pleasure to deal with.

In terms of relic it was recreating the wear it already had which was exactly as I wanted.

Is @WezV still around? Not seen him on here for ages - which is a shame - his work is brilliant.

Emailed a few months back, he doesn’t like to do refins on new guitars

There are quite a few relicers  in the U.K., but with no disrespect to any of them, because I certainly couldn’t do any better lol, but a lot of their work you can tell is very artificial, like a razor to the paint kind of thing. So far I’m impressed with the suggestions that you guys have given me.

Another vote for Rich’s work, he’ll do exactly what you ask for. Also gives lots of consultation before he starts work and then regular progress updates along the way.

I see you are in Taunton @joebonamassa15 so someone for you to consider is Paul Neild at Retro169 in Newquay Cornwall. He is very good at aged and reliced finishes and his prices are OK.

A nice variation for you to snack on.

You’re a braver man than me for asking Clive to refinish a new guitar! ;)

As @Danielsguitars said it takes a while to achieve certain looks. And as you’ve also mentioned there are plenty of others doing the “aged thing” with a sheet of 80 grit sandpaper and a pack of Stanley blades after spraying their finishes with aerosols. How they make a living I do not know. Their sandblasted finishes certainly makes it difficult for the rest of us to show people how it’s supposed to be done.

Give me a shout if you need anything.

They’re making videos with Norm. Oh, and signing new endorsements for some rare Gibson mash up guitars :D

Out of curiosity, if it was a new guitar - assuming a nitro finish - would you relic the existing finish or strip it off and start over?

  • Thanks for all the comments guys. It’s actually a fender baja telecaster I would like to have refinished like a real aged 50s blackguard
