Chorus... A thing of the past

So I seem to find myself using chorus less and less often now... Is it a thing of the past as even seem to see more and more pedalboards without a chorus on.

Yes, it should have been left in the 80s.

IMHO it depends on what kind of music you play and how close you want to that sound.

My chorus is always on.   Then again,  I am stuck in thr 80s when I play solos.

Give it 5 years 18 months and it will be back in style.

I use it for There She Goes in the cover band. Vile.

I think people use it in a way that makes it sound too 80’s - strumming and arpeggiated parts.

But used on funky chops in a break it can sound great.  But then you’re really just going to 70’s cliche instead.  But 70’s chorus is cooler.

I like chorus, at least in moderation. But then I grew up in the 80s...

If I had to pick only one modulation effect it would be a phaser though.

I have just taken my BYOC CE2 clone off my board. I only used it for songs where the original demanded chorus, and in fact the only such songs I can bring to mind just now are Ever Fallen In Love ('solo' section) and Rebel Yell. If I find myself desperately needing chorus one day I can either dial in some modulation on a delay pedal, or use phasing. I love my Phase 100!

Slightly OT, the CE2 made way for a Crowther Hot Cake placed after the Phase 100, to give the option of phase shifter into overdrive - mmm....

Turns out the chorus sound I was looking for was actually flange.

  • No, it's just current trends. Give it a while and sickly chorus will be back.

I love chorus so might be biased...

I love a bit of chorus, but then I play in covers bands so we do a bit of 80s stuff.

A good flanger can cover chorus, faux phase and flange effects. - finicky to dial in but they are there.

Ears are strange things -  used to love chorus until quite recently when it started to annoy me - it's sickly sweet trilling modulation became positively unpleasant to my shell-likes.

Ryan Adams tried to bring it back a year or two ago. Had a signature pedal with it on too. Look what's happened to him.

I have tried multiple times to get chorus working for me. I do like the Dimension sound, and other people get nice CE1 and Small Clone style sounds. But it never quite gels for me.

I prefer phase or subtly dialled in flange. Exactly like @Fishboy7 above, when I got the Helix Stomp and started trying to dial in modulation sounds to add a bit of subtle movement to clean or driven sounds, what I ended up with, after a lot of experimentation, was subtle flanging.

Isn't it used by lead players, looking to fatten up their driven sound rather than as a chorusing effect?

Or five, but all turned on at once :).

You jest, but I often do run more than one at a time and if I'm using tri-stereo, that can be effectively 6 at once just on its own! :)
    I think, therefore.... I... ummmm........
