Single fret too high

and causing zinging on one string.........how do i tap that fret down bearing in mind i have no proper tools?

    If the guitar is valuable, you either acquire the correct tools or pay somebody to tackle the job for you.

    If the guitar is cheap, the fret wire may be economy shite. Vigorous tapping could deform it.

    Try a firm tap with a small hammer, so long as you're accurate and don't hit anything else, all should be good. Sometimes though they just won't be hammered back in. In which case a fret clamp does the trick, also a thin superglue is useful (immediately prior to clamping).

    it's a brand new guitar so most likely 1 x fret has not seated properly....

    Get thee back to the shop post haste & get them to sort it for you (& shower you with compensatory goodies for your emotional distress).

    might not be the fret, the string might have a downward kink in it, take it to your local luthier
