    George Harrison?
Mick Mars from Motley Crue (some serious riffage)?

    Glenn Tilbrook.
I saw him play solo once and he widdled non-stop.

The 16-year-old Glenn Tilbrook was also briefly in the Only Ones and ruined some of their early tracks by widdling non-stop over them.

Not sure if that makes him over- or under-rated -- clearly a good guitarist from a technical point of view but possibly prone to self-indulgence.

Steve Howe - exactly the right guitarist in exactly the right band at exactly the right time.

Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

    Steve Hackett?
Don’t recall his name coming up in the overrated or underrated threads.

I like many of those great 'pop' guitar players whose playing supports the song - Lindsey Buckingham, Neil Finn, Mike Campbell, Keith Scott etc - Never flashy but everything they do is just right and adds colour to the song

I’d add Robbie Macintosh to that list - his playing on The Pretenders’ ‘Hymn to Her’ is a masterclass in taste - and he’s played plenty of weirder stuff such as on Talk Talk’s ‘The Colour of Spring’ album. A great player.

A very underrated guitarist - he invented tapping, y'know!

  • Will Sergeant - not the most technically proficient, perhaps, but his playing probably wouldn't be half as good if he were...

Danny Kirwan was one of those "just right" players, although the more I think about it the more I think he was seriously underrated.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

This thread is essentially a list of guitarist whom I have never ever heard of, ergo fits the title perfectly.

I think there is a host of players you can add to this - Andy when in The Police and Steve Stevens in Billy Idol days - ie the guitar player who is there to support the song and not just about big solos or another 12 bar break
