Slightly off topic but did you try any sinker models on your travels?

Weren’t on my radar - not sure if they had any of those in Guitar Village but I pretty much stayed in the D28 corner

They're fantastically easy not to buy, or in fact read about, or comment on.

How would you rather a maker differentiates between lines with different features...colour coding?

    You've changed man.

I remember when you were all about your Les Paul and your JCM800.

Aging gracefully is a terrible waste! :D :D

Right, negotiations were had, guitars were put on hold while I pondered, and today I called up and did the deal.

Expect a NGD thread on Wednesday.

  • Any experience with Taylor guitars Tim? And if so, how do they contrast with Martin ones?

    Bye!

Taylors - generally brighter and more modern sounding

Martins - more emphasis on sounding woody/darker/warmer & more traditional sounding.

But these are generalisations and things do vary from guitar to guitar.

    What are you after Drew?

Heh heh heh. Well I have a Taylor 810, and a darker/warmer guitar is probably where my head is at right now. Thinking about flogging the Taylor to get a Martin.

    Bye!

If you're finding the Taylor bright then it might be a good idea to shift it.

IMO, if you're looking for a Martin voiced guitar I'd recommend having a look at Furch.  They make left handed guitars, but you might have order one.

Check this video out, a Martin v Furch one

Not with any of the high end ones no - I'd played a couple of lower (maybe 214/314 cutaway models) years ago and hadn't done anything for me so I never really bothered beyond that.

imho the Martin thing is as much about a deeper/stronger fundamental as it is about warmer/less bright - although there are many folk more familiar with them than me.

I'm also a total sucker for the iconic look of a J45 so I'll say try those too :-)

  • Cheers fellas, I think I'll go and try out some mid to high end Martin's. The 810 cost me a pretty penny. I don't hate it, it's great. But it's not exactly where I want to be.

If you can take your Taylor with you and try it against a new (H)D28 Reimagined you'll know inside a minute if that's the direction you want to go

I have one of the new Reimagined HD28s. It's flawless and the aged toner looked a bit plain yellow when I bought it in November last year but with time hanging on the wall the wood is aging and grain showing through nicely now and it doesn't look so new, this will only get better as the years roll by.

Tone wise I find the forward shifted bracing added some extra high end zing when new but that's starting to even out a bit and the sound become more balanced with time, especially with D'addario EJ17 strings fitted (I previously used Exilir nano coated)

The 1 3/4 nut width took a little time to adjust to from a previous D28 1 11/16ths but I don't notice it now.

    I love Martin Guitars!
