As you know all too well, it is Masonite.
Manufactured off licence in the UK (i.e. not authentic) as hardboard

It’s certainly enough reason for me not to buy a new one. I’m happy to buy second hand though.

I got one recently when eBay had a discount code on, the stock 59 model in vintage cream, satin natural maple neck, natural headstock.

I really do like it. Simple but very effective, and the middle position is wired in series which gives a quick way of getting a boost.

Great guitars, horrible company. CEO is a Trump donor, and gave money towards Prop 8 (US version of Clause 28, effectively). Let your conscience be your guide, and obviously it's a secondhand one so yer cash won't go straight in Ridinger's pocket, but at least put a rainbow sticker on the headstock and vote to impeach. Or save up for a Jerry Jones like I did.

I really think the Korean reissues from the 90s/early 00s are the ones to look for. They're lighter and feel more similar in construction to the originals, and the pickups are less hot and generic. So the overall character is more Danelectro-y.

The U3 and DC-3 even had intonateable metal bridges, which are quite nice. Here's the DC-3. I also had a DC-59 from '07 which didn't do anything for me.

I had a Danobass, silver sparkle finish, or The Alan Carr edition as my missus named it, sounded great, bent and buckled under string tension, avoid.
