What's Hot

I've recently been getting into some 1960s R&B, the likes of The Meters and Booker T & The MGs and have found myself really taken by the funky rhythm guitar sections. I've also come across bands such as Them, Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Pretty Things, as well as the twangy reverb laden sounds produced by Phil Spector. I feel like I've been missing some really great music that was made during this era and I love finding new stuff to listen to. I know I've stated a broad spectrum of genres here but does anyone have any suggestions for other bands/albums/songs akin to the ones I've mentioned above?

@terada ;I get the reference but few under forty will.  :3

@kswilson89 R&B means different things to different audience demographics. Most of the acts on your list are white people, imitating the popular music of people currently labeled African American.

Instead of trying to unravel what those people have in common, I am going to post the very first thing that popped into my head whilst reading your post.......

Check out some memphis stuff. I've been playing the Champion by Willie Mitchell past few days, great little riff, and there's plenty of great Stax records featuring Booker T's band. A lot of records that became big on the mod scene also featured some nice guitar parts (and a lot of the British blues artists were influenced by these records), for example Bobby Parker Watch Your Step (basically 'borrowed' by the Beatles for I Feel Fine, and suspiciously reminiscent of 19th Nervous Breakdown by the Rolling Stones) Killin' Floor by Howlin Wolf (featuring a young Buddy Guy) and Bobby Bland (check out Turn On Your Lovelight, and You Got Me).

    Any early Yardbirds, especially live.
Donny Hathaway Live. There are hundreds of soul, jazz and r&b albums on the Atlantic label many of which are/were considered brilliant.
Quicksilver's 1st 2 albums are the best ones.
You could try early Steve Miller - "Sailor" is a good one.
Marvin Gaye - "Trouble Man" and Isaac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul" - you must hear those.
Funk tightened up in the 70s; but it wasn't all disco. The Crusaders, Tower of Power, Stuff (Live in New York) and many more.

School is also a verb, not just a building where you were spanked.

There's a 10 cd Stax collection that has a ton of gems with phenomenal rhythm playing.
My Trade Feedback Thread is here

    My Girl - The Temptations
Ain't to Proud to beg - The Temptations
Papa was a Rollin' Stone - The Temptations
This Old Heart of Mine - Isley Bros.

A bit later and shows the evolution of guitar sound.
A bit of live Stevie, no fancy gear just raw talent.

It's also a group of fish and regardless of grammar "school me" is lame Americana internets
