To expand on what I said previously, I will give most things a listen, however I guess generally if I like something, then it's already "in" and in some way regarded as good by the metropolitan liberal elite. Hence I like things like Jordi Savall, old music etc., but find myself leaning away from "classical" in an orchestral sense as it's not cool. Actually that's not true, I prefer small ensembles. Then I will find myself liking the late Yuzo Iwata, who of course is/was achingly cool.

I prefer imaginative music, I guess, although also probably listen to quite a bit of formulaic pap.

    My feedback thread is here.

I honestly think I'm happier with the few (maybe100 tops) albums that I really like than 2000 that I probably wouldn't listen to much.
Even if I had the money I'd struggle to pick 2000 records that I really liked. There would be a good bit of dross in there, just for show.

If I worked in a studio as some sort of sound engineer I suppose it would be good to have lots of different stuff as references.

My taste in music may not be very wide, but it's very deep.

    Much like my good self.

2,500 odd CDs, slightly more LPs, and then a load more tapes, singles and digital albums.

Not sure I'd say it's that wide  but I listen to a mix of various rock/metal genres from 6pe garage to proto metal to classic 80s to grind, death and black metal.
Then loads of hop hop, some Motown/Stax, some pop, classical/orchestral, folk/ neofolk, ambient etc.
I can't really listen to anything with a modern metal production.  Triggered drums and high gain amps last about 10 seconds when having a listen

Have you heard the new Baroness album btw?  The mixing on the album has seemed to create a bit of a divide.

I've been getting into a bit of black/death metal recently, but finding it really tricky to discover more than a few bands I like.  Any chance of a few recommendations via PM?

Not yet, although I have seen some people moaning about it. Amazing live band though.

    And of course.

I saw them around Red Album, quite a while back being supported by Torche at the Camden Underworld, maybe 2006 or 2007?

I'll send you a PM, cheers.

I’d like to think I’ve got fairly varied taste in music - it’s mostly ‘eavy stuff but I do own records from The Human League, Prince, Carter USM, Supertramp, The Smiths, The Shamen, Public Enemy, Shame, PIL, The Specials, Adam And The Ants, Sleaford Mods and Orbital.

    I like what I like.

I think the majority of my CDs can be mostly summarised as blokes with guitars whinging about stuff.
Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a guitar a little.

I was there. Probably the only time I saw them that they were not mind blowing. Following Torche is no easy feat.

    Ah wow.

Yep, Torche were amazing.  Insanely loud too.  It was a strange gig where it seemed most of the audience was there to see Torche, I remember quite a few people leaving straight after they played.

Anyway I'll leave this thread as I've been going off topic.  I'll send you a PM about black metal!

I used to have quite a broad taste in music. But I don't anymore. Mostly listen to European metal - mostly melodeth - these days. And some prog rock.
That sums up me too. I still own a lot of different types of music, classical, opera (inherited from my dad who was a massive fan), African, Indian, electronic, folk, pop, classic rock, blues, but it rarely gets a look in these days. I mostly listen to jazz and metal now, plus prodigious amounts of King Crimson, Tool, Porcupine Tree. The only things I’m not that keen on are brass bands and “easy listening” (but then I do own a John Barry album so even that’s not completely ruled out).

I have been thinking about this on and off and whether wide tastes means you should like everything. Which I don't. What I think happens to some extent is the more familiar you are with something the more you can flex a critical muscle. So, for example, I like Richard Thompson but not Mark Knopfler  even though I understand that to someone else they might as well be the same person.  Whereas this week I have been listening to Les Poules A Colin which is a French Canadian folk band. I don't really have a very strong frame of reference for French Canadian folk so I'm more accepting that it is what it is and apart from the relatively obvious ( does it sound in tune, do I like the noise they are making)  I have no idea whether they are any good within  their chosen sphere or not.

I think there is also something about hearing music in context  - opera at an opera, jazz in a smoky club, EDM in a sweaty nightclub, that Algerian folk band you danced to drunk on holiday. Just 'sit down and listen' can be hard work.

As long as your taste in music makes you happy, then that's fine.

Although I must have one fo the widest tastes, as I have all of Taste's albums.

Just looking at the first 140 records on my shelf they are exclusively Basement Jaxx, The Cult, The Damned, Deep Purple and Duran Duran. The 3rd shelf is 100% Russian C19th/20th piano music. So quite diverse. or quite specialised. Not sure which!

The western/country joke from the Blues Brothers is funny. But ... taking it literally, I listen to quite a lot of Western swing—which is basically jazz with added violin and some yeehawing—but basically no country.

    Absolutely!
