Help with Yamaha DTXPLORER and recording

@DrCornelius ;
Is selling a drumkit https://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/164090/fs-yamaha-dtxplorer-digital-drum-kit#latest . A family member is looking to purchase as a gift so I need advice on recording capability with DAW into a Windows 10 PC. I guess with the correct midi cable Windows 10 will not have an issue? Assuming he doesn't want to use a midi and just record then some people say just use a jack convertor to 3.5mm and record from a mic input, . . . . mmmm not sure about quality on that. Any advice please. What type of Midi cable is required so I can source one of those please.

Thanks in advance folks - help appreciated!

  • Sorry that I can’t be of much help ! It’s my lads kit and he just plugs into a bass amp and turns it up as loud as he can get away with

  • Not sure if this is helpful or not, but...

    I used to have a full band playing (quietly) in my house with an electronic drum kit. Normally the drummer would just go through a practice amp. One time, though, as an experiment, we connected him to my Mac using MIDI and a standard MIDI cable (via a PreSonus iTwo audio interface, but we could have used a USB cable directly in, I think). He was then able to trigger the software drums in Logic Pro and it sounded pretty good. That wasn't the sound of his kit we were hearing, though - it was whichever software drum kit we picked from the very long list of choices in Logic. They all sounded pretty good to me. I seem to remember we did have to alter a couple of options on his kit to get it working properly.

    Logic captured the MIDI commands as a MIDI track for editing, just like it would for any other MIDI controller.

    Thanks @TheBigDipper I have been researching cables there are midi to usb. Alternatively I think a digital interface would work, recording as a wave file.

    I think a Round UM one is midid to USB converter...I used one with my Mac and a Roland keyboard, works fine.
