Brilliant woodworking hack: The Ticking Stick

What's Hot
I just chanced on this video about ticking-sticks.

I've never heard of this device before but it's a simple quite genius idea for accurately marking up difficult shape for cutting.

You learn something new ever day.

Not sure what it is? I couldn't be bothered to watch 7 minutes of video, jumped a couple of times and I'm still confused. Life is too short to engage with everything. Next!

    what I read

Funny enough I also read tickling every time until the guy said 'ticking' in the video. It sure looked like a weird tickling stick.

This is one thing worthy of seven minutes of your time.

The woman in the video is called Leah Bolden and she's got a whole tonne of amazing DIY/building tips available via her youtube channel "See Jane Drill".

I, too, expected this Discussion to be the work of RandallFlagg ... not least because of the single entendre humour lurking in the YouTube video channel name.

"See Jane Drill" sounds like a porn site.

It only really works for straight lines though right ? A curved hole wouldnt really work with that stick ?

Not at all. It would be shit, unless you used it to draw the arc.

The stick can be used to register any shape. A curved shape would just require more reference points. An simple arc would be easier to mark with other tools.

The only critical stipulation is that the surface on which the markings are to be made should not mask any of the corners of the shape being copied.

The video mentions boat building. I suspect that the ticking stick could also be of use in stone masonry.

OK, fl;ipped through the vid and I can see what he was doing, but I just can't see the point. He could have stuck the flat bit underneath and drawn around the shape in about 4 seconds.

Agreed but what if the wood was stuck on the wall and you can' put anything underneath ..... this often comes up when your plasterboarding attic rooms with sloped walls due to the roof.

Check out this video of it being used to fit shelving tight against a uneven wall.
