No I don't think it makes much difference unless a person has OCD about it...

I will say that one piece bits of wood that size are a bit more expensive just cos there is less of it that size. But only a bit. Its just about what can be sourced at any given time..

My 2019 American Professional tele is a 3 piece from what I can see.

Rings out lovely.. moreso than my ibanez and Ltd. Not very comparable guitars though.

For me, I look at if its set up well, plays well and sounds well and feels quality.

I'm cool with 3 pieces in the above instance. More than 3, I would feel annoyed because, why? Even if it sounded decent.

The only easy day, was yesterday...

  • I have done parts casters in 1 2  and three-piece bodies. Mostly with the same hardware spec and yes you can tell the difference between Alder and Ash but not really the number of pieces. Would you turn down a 64 Vintage Strat with a 2 piece body.

I was under the impression that most custom shop bodies were off the line it's more about the time spent on the fit and finish. And when I did the Fender tour they went on about 2 or three-piece bodies as being far more stable. Especially for touring instruments that go through loads of humidity and temp changes.

I used to have a thing in my head about one piece being superior but with age, I think it matters little as Ash said its far more about the sum of the parts.

Although I do think three-piece necks change the tone and are fine if you like it.  If I wanted a vintage Gibson style I would want it classic one piece even if it's weaker.

My mates 70's custom is a pancake lump three-piece top maple neck but sounds as good a you would want a Les Paul to sound.

    Only if the grain shows
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

seems the trend on youtube is to make a guitar from as many pieces as possible.

lollipop sticks, coloured pencils, lego ect. of course the real aim here is not to build a guitar. The guitar is a by product of making a video that will hopefully get views

Possibly coincidence but sound-wise all my favourite guitars have had one piece bodies.

Does it really matter under a thick coat of poly?

Yes a one piece body is clearly much better - just imagine how awful it would be to play if your guitar body was in pieces :)

  • A one piece body is more likely to warp than two-three smaller pieces.

I wonder if the glue line has anything to do with resonance?

My opinion only ...utter hogwash. To be filed in the unicorn tears and snake-oil folder. Plus in a world where more and more people are vegan hide glue is an animal derived anachronism we can easily do without. Titebond has been an industry standard for many years ... are we saying all the beautiful instruments made with Titebond are rubbish?

Am I the only one worried by a hardness comparison involving Elmer's Wood?

If glue sounded that good, somebody would build the entire guitar from it. ;)
