DIY truss rods - going nuts !

Hi folks 

I am going to make myself some single action truss rods.   I have a small stock of 5mm mild steel rod and a good tap and die.  The only parts that I haven’t got are brass truss rod nuts 

I fancy making some 5mm threaded brass nuts from dome hex nuts which seem plentiful and cheap online.  

Has anyone else tried drilling out 4mm threaded hex nuts to make their own truss rod acorn nuts ?   

Seems like it should work well and be a low cost solution compared to buying Gibson style truss rod nuts online.  

Any thoughts ?

That seems like a lot of hassle for a relatively simple part of the build.

I’d just buy the truss rod!

I guess we all do what we can.  For me, getting that insert made for the drill press was an easy option, but I'd not know where to start with making a truss rod!

I buy just the nuts, half moon washers and barrels in packs of 10 then buy my 3/16 rods

It's cheaper that way but I have to tap them

There are logs from a couple of different species seasoning in the barn, and I have my eye on a field maple at the top of the garden.

How far do you want to go? Bridge? Machine heads?

I’ll stop at truss rods for sure ! 
I think it’s because I was so disappointed at the quality of the first single action rod I have bought , and thought bloody hell, I could do better myself ! ...making and modding.....

Maybe i’ll just cough up the few quid for some brass nuts.
