UK (groove?) metal band, late 90s, early 00s?

What's Hot
I remember seeing a video of these guys on Scuzz, around 8 years ago or so, roughly. I think they had reformed for the Download festival, but were originally active during the 90s, early 00s I think.
They sounded like a cross between early Machine Head, with a nod to Pantera. I just cannot remember the name. I came across a video on YouTube of their stuff shortly after seeing them on Scuzz, but can't remember what they are called.
A long shot but anyone remember them? I know, once I see a video link "yeah, that's them!"... but as of yet, no joy.

  • Defo not Earthone 9. Possibly Dearly Beheaded, but don't think so on closer listen.

  • I don't remember these bands but the results of my research are as follows:

    Pulkas? More Helmet/Deftonesy though

    Iron Monkey? Too sludgy maybe

I played with both of them. In fact I'm still friends with a few of IM and I have a LP studio that I got from Steve from IM, but that was Jim's.

  • I found this very interesting article on how a thriving UK metal scene in the 90's came to an end with the coming of Nu-metal from the US - with Korn's set at Donnington in 1996 being a key moment in this transition. Lists a few bands around in the late 90's/early 2000's.

    Impressive,

Iron Monkey (were/are) a superb band. A mate of mine played me some of their stuff when we were 16 or so and it blew my mind.

I knew Stu from playing with Acrimony early on, and in fact he was the person that first told me about them. I knew Dean from London gigs and he was a massive Eyehategod fan at the time IM came out. The both ended up joining to replace Steve and Jim. Have you heard Rid? It's black metal played by the current IM line up.

Not sure it's any of the above mentioned. I think they may have been classed as "hardcore". I read that article link by @MagicPigDetective and am reminded of how good the Earthtone9 album is. Brilliant album.

Oh, and it's not One Minute Silence or Breed 77 either.... grrr....

  • Definitely not Raging Speedhorn. Think the singer had short hair as well if that narrows it down...

Actually yeah Stampin' Ground do kinda fit this description as @Vibetronic says. They reformed about a decade back but disappeared again soon after. 'Carved From Empty Words' is such a killer album.

  • I think it could be Stamping Ground yep. Thanks to this thread, I've discovered some UK bands I had not previously been aware of.

EDIT: Sorry. Only just seen the "UK" bit.
