Went to see Haunt the other day, great band, and they were playing superstrat stype guitars.

Singer was playing a single pickup kramer, the other guitarist was playing a single pickup fender superstrat type that had 1 pickup, a side mounted jack, and a black headstock.

It had me reminiscing about my kramer aerostar that I had in the late 80's.

So it got me thinking - what;s a good bang for buck single pickup NWOBHM style superstrat for me to keep my eye out for?

    * Music Man Luke 1, Luke II

    Please drop me a message.

That's what I came here to say.
Awesome guitar, I had mine in '89 I think.

Put one together yourself. Probably the wrong colour for a NWOBHM style guitar, but all in mine probably owes me around £300/350. Painted it myself though, so getting someone else to do it would obviously increase the price.

I’ve wanted a single pickup Charvel Model 1 for ages but the prices seem to have gone up a bit. I had a Model 1C years ago and loved the neck on it despite normally being a Gibson player. Sold it for stupidly cheap, as is the way with most of my guitar related sales :(

I'm a long time gibson player so I'm lost when it comes to other stuff!

Possibly not 80s enough but ESP/LTD have the black metal range which are single pickup blacked out versions of the M/EC/Viper models. Hardtail too so you don’t have a useless trem to mess about with.

    Or their new ‘87 series.

I'm with you on that, I find Fender and Gibson scales are very different.

There are some superstrats with Gibson scale, like the Nightswan, but it's a slog trying to go through every effing listing trying to find them.

You'd think Andertons, etc, would make that a selectable search option...

If you want to be 80's metal but you also want to be a bit of a lad about it, take an HSS 80's metal guitar and remove the two single coils and any tone controls or switch and leave the gaping holes in a devil-may-care kind of nod to Van-Halen.

Depends how pretty you want to look while doing it?

Charvel Model series is a good call.

    Ibanez RG410 Roadstar II.

Ibanez RS315 is a nice guitar but the Hard Rocker vibrato is probably best blocked off flush against the body.

Squier Hello Kitty Strat + white high output humbucker = serious Rawk geetar.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

You mentioned the NWOBHM, those guys slightly pre-dated the single pickup Superstrat era and many started out using customised regular Strats.

With that in mind, I always thought Joe Holmes was cool with his highly-modified '70s Strats (not sure if he got new necks made or somehow had a 22nd fret added)

Must admit, I always considered 'superstrats' as being punchy with humbuckers, maybe extra pickups, upgraded trems etc.  although I do love the minimalist look.

Basically, guitars, I like them fat, I like them tall, some skinny, some small, I got to get to know them all  :-D
