Just thinking about this, there is a difference between a movie with that great/well known 'theme' track like Pink Panther, or Dr No and the Saturday Night Fever style of movie, with an album full of well known songs

Most David Lynch films use music to great atmospheric effect.

Slightly obscure one but Atomic by Mogwai (does it still count if it's a documentary?)

Daft Punk's Tron album is pretty good as well.

Miles Davis score to the film Jack Johnson is considered one of the greatest jazz albums of all time.

Not a very sophisticated choice I know but I'd probably go Dusk til Dawn. I really don't like it as a film but the music makes the entire thing tolerable. Really the soundtrack and some pictures of kittens for an hour would be fine.

But I think much of the SNF soundtrack was still written for the movie and became well known after? The more modern approach is to grab a bunch of well known tracks for instant reference ( my choice above sitting somewhere between the two as it has old stuff and some soundtrack specific material).

And whilst I'm here can I give honorary mention to:

Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

I think that the early 007 movies with the music arrangements of John Barry were very similar - The days of Sean and Spectre

This is a guitar forum so I'm going to limit myself to the best guitar-heavy soundtrack which is Mark Knopfler and Local Hero.

    Donnie Darko or Restless Natives

I'm assuming you mean "Donnie Brasco" as I can't think how anything in Donnie Darko could relate to gangsters. "Restless Natives", to me, is more of a buddy-movie with its Robin Hood sensibilities.

Is also not a gangster movie...more a gang movie, which isn't necessarily the same.

Natural Born Killers - superb tracks throughout and the album kept little bits of dialogue in the right places.  Worth it for L7's Shit List alone
