The more modern approach is to grab a bunch of well known tracks for instant reference ( my choice above sitting somewhere between the two as it has old stuff and some soundtrack specific material).

I'm assuming you mean "Donnie Brasco" as I can't think how anything in Donnie Darko could relate to gangsters. "Restless Natives", to me, is more of a buddy-movie with its Robin Hood sensibilities.
Is also not a gangster movie...more a gang movie, which isn't necessarily the same.
