Budget Interface Recommendations

Darren, I have just started the same journey as you and am happy so far with my Presonus Firestudio that I got off the forum. An sm58 for the guitar, digital piano goes in the back, and as a plus I'm using the midi cable off of one of my amps to give the digital piano a second lease of life as a midi controller. Lots of silly sounds to get in Garageband but it's also a help for sketching songs. My mac is late 2008 but running a recent OS X.

This is very much of a new learning curve for me. 

Not so much of a difference between 2nd and 3rd gen, 2nd gen is good.

The 1st gen had problems with high latency (and apparently clipping on the instrument inputs, though I never experienced that) so the 2nd gen was a massive improvement.
