0000 wire wool for me - much quicker than erasers

I find the rubber detritus just as messy as wire wool - only difference being it’s not magnetic, so masking the pups would be ‘gold standard’
Same for me, specifically liberon brand.... Colron 00000 is actually coarser than liberon 0000, and falls apart making a lot more mess.

I don't mind a bit of shrapnel because the wire wool works so well with my technique.  I mask the pickups and hoover up before removing the tape though

I also like micromesh for polishing after the wire wool has cleaned everything up.

I have some crimson fret rubbers, but never really got on with them.

I have some fret rubbers from Stewmac and Tonetech (Hosco). Even the finest of them never get frets shiny enough and like Wes I use micromesh.

The fret rubbers just take up space in my "fretting" drawer and if anybody wants them they can have them.

My coarse and medium are in need of replacing, so I'll happily have yours Steve. If you pm me details, I can transfer you the cost of postage. Cheers.

I've tried fret rubbers and didn't like them due to the mess. Micromesh works very well, even for a full fret dress' worth of polishing.

I have some gorgomyte cloths just arrived in a recent stewmac order but haven't tried those yet.

It's okay I'll cover postage, they should fit in a large envelope. PM your address and I'll stick them in the post.

    Great job OP.

I use a metal fret template and a tiny amount of Solvol Autosol on a duster, and a LOT of elbow grease. Does a great job and I haven’t had to mask off a fretboard for literally decades. I might try a miracle cloth though, sounds good and would remove the need to clean off any polishing compound that’s escaped through the fret template onto the board!

I use duraglit or brasso and will also use it on the between the frets to get the gunk off then immediately after apply lemon oil works for me, I would add never owned a guitar with a maple fretboard

I bought the set of fret rubbers from Crimson a few months ago. I must be doing something wrong because I find them rubbish (no pun intended). They just take up space in my tool chest now.

  • Liberon 0000 wire wool is my choice too. I don't even mask off the fretboard any more, if you work with the grain it takes a lot of the gunk off the fretboard while you're going.
Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

I also use Solvol Autosol , it can be a bit messy but works well. I often use it to give the frets a final polish after levelling when I still have masking tape on the fret board. To speed up the process I polish the Autusol off using a soft polishing wheel in my Dremel.

+1, just remember to keep the dremel speed down or you end up re-decorating your' walls  =)

I have a guitar where I can feel the fret ends, but they're not sharp.

I don't notice them once playing, but I do when I initially sit down - Do you think these would work for them?

I use Gibson fret polish on everything - It's pretty good, but I've never had to file anything down etc.

Been there done that. I always keep the speed down, (frets can get a bit warm otherwise), and when possible do the polishing outside in the garden. If I do the polishing in the workshop I put a sheet of old cardboard in the direction of the potential splatter.

You'll really need a file for that job. If you don't want the expense of a specialist file, then those two sided nail file/shapers work well.
