Playing with others via the internet ?

I've seen plenty of clips lately of people jamming together over the internet in real-time.  What are they using and how have they managed to get around the latency problem ?  -  or is everyone just putting up with it ?

    They aren't jamming. They record all their parts separately with a click track and then edit it to make it look like a jam.

    My girlfriend tried a variety of the free apps recently, but the latency was an issue on all of them. Gave up in the end!
