Studio one DAW - any good?

What's Hot
So bit the bullet and ordered a presonus interface. Comes packaged with studio one artist. Any users here? I'm using reaper currently.

I understand that the artist version doesn't support third party plugins, is that correct?

Cheers

Is it any good - well...if you like it then yes its great....but hey so are many others, Ive used it for a few years now, can't really find any major issue, no more than any other DAW anyhow.

There are definitely other users here, plus you can hop on the Facebook user group.

Correct you need an add-on for 3rd party vst,....but I suggest if you get into it, just upgrade to a version with it, but really for starters the stock are fine.

I did a short vid for another reason but it shows a bit of S1 in action...

    Yes that is correct

    https://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one/compare-versions

If you have artist version you can can buy support as an add on but you might as well go the whole hog and get the Pro version. Studio One is usually heavily discounted when they have a sale so worth keeping an eye on that.

I like Studio One. Its not perfect but what DAW is?
It's certainly much nicer than Sonar (now defunct) that I used to use.

I use it - though I have Pro.  Personally its the best DAW Ive used for me.  Ive not used them all obviously but I have used Pro Tools L3 (7.3), Reaper and Cubase.

I've been using Samplitude Pro X3 for years, but I'm thinking of jumping ship.  I'm thinking of buying a Presonus Quantum 2626 which also comes with the artist version of Studio One.
I didn't realise that you couldn't use third party VST's with Studio One!  Actually shockingly poo in this day and age, but then thinking about how Magix have been with they're upgrade path lately I'm thinking that the £100 upgrade path that presonus is asking is still half prise compared to the £200 upgrade that Magix is asking for what is essentially an incremental bug fix that others seem to just give free isn't so bad.  Still shite though, just not quite as shite tbh.

You can....just not the free version unless you buy the VST add on.....read the post ;-)

I’ve been using DAWs for 20 years, started with a cut down version of Cubase, the moved to Tracktion, then Sonar Platinum for many years. Switched to Studio One pro three years ago, and of those I’ve used, it is the best. Everything seems very intuitive to me, and above all it is rock solid and doesn’t crash. That may well be the case with many others these days, but to me, that’s the most important thing. Also, if you get a FaderPort/8/16 one day, the experience is even better.

Cheers - the interface I've ordered is the new ioStation 24c, which is the fader port and inbuilt 2 channel interface with the nice mic pres. Looks like a great bit of kit, but obviously although it can be used in other software, designed to integrate best with studio one.

Ah, nice one! Seen that featured in Sound on Sound and looks perfect. The integration will be perfect of course. If you want some great guidance on mastering the FaderPort, then Home Studio Trainer on YouTube is a massive resource.

Got that bit dude, that's what I meant by needing to pay £100 for the upgrade just to use VST.  Pretty Poo really, but like I said may still be worth it as it's £200 to update Samplitude.

Is that expensive? Does it make it almost worth just getting the Pro?

I have used Reaper before which handles plugins without any issue - I assumed it was the same for other DAWs, but that is possibly just my lack of knowledge of them.

What sort of virtual instruments does Studio One have inbuilt?

I’d need to check the specs to be honest, probably best if you go on their version comparison chart.

of course the Pro version is good, but has its little glitches like most.

Thanks. The comparrison just says 5 insruments. If that is 5 types of instruments i.e drums, synth, keys, bass etc and each has a list of individual instruments I may well be sold

Sadly noticed this after I bought the Artist version. Ah well. Interestingly I found that EZ Drummer worked in Studio One, which begs the question which plugins will work in the artist version?

I've got the Artist licence. you can trial the professional version for 30 days which I'm currently doing as want to use helix native.  Then will decide whether its worth the extra £120 to upgrade as opposed to getting a reaper licence.
