I can't recall where I read/heard, but I think it was a video of Steve explaining bracing perhaps, or maybe it was Lowden. Oh well. The point being, they sand everything down under the top, rounding off hard edges and removing any rough bits after the chisel so that sound waves reflect better off surfaces, whereas a rough surface will absorb the sound.
yes, Steve told me about that
Some other Luthiers do that too
Stefan Sobell buys into that to the extent that the interior of his guitars have a very thin varnish coating as well as ridiculously assiduous attention to smoothing of every surface.

BTW having these pics of the build is brilliant.
Does the varnish help stop the body reacting to humidity variations?

Did you see the photos of the last custom build they did for me?

@ToneControl - just catching up with this thread as I'm rarely on here these days.

WHAT A GUITAR this will be! Loving the bookmatching and crisp cutaway .. might have to head over for a little look in the flesh!

please do, I guess you know the guys already

I looked at the different cutaway angles with my last custom build from Avalon, and felt that looked the best for me: some guitars out there came to a too long and sharp point, and some were not really showing enough of a curve for me, ending barely above the base of the curve.

Since I want a 12 fret to get the best movement from the soundboard, the cutaway is needed, although I'd usually not bother on a 14 fret

I was trying to think of something new-sounding, and Steve mentioned the Koa they had in the kiln, it seemed like a great idea
