Reaper, Helix and GGD

What's Hot
My home PC set up is pretty basic, I have a Windows 10 machine (which was upgraded from Windows 8), 16gb RAM and AMD E2.  Im running Reaper, using Helix as my sound card (but I have a UX2 also incase) and using GGD Modern and Massive for drums as a VST Plug in rather than as a virtual instrument.

Recording guitar and drums at the same time, Ive been setting the Soundcard to ASIO with a sample rate of 896 (using ASIO4ALL because I dont seem to be able to get the Helix ASIO to work properly) and monitoring via the PC. Example

Track 1 - Guitar wet (recording, monitoring)
Track 2 - Guitar DI (recording, not monitoring)
Track 3 - Drums (as VST/Plug in, MIDI)

it seems to be ok but sometimes I think it literally hits a wall in terms of capability and stops for a second or two.

Am I doing this right?

While recording guitar, wouldn't it be better to set Reaper to Helix ASIO and (hardware/direct) monitor with the built in Helix sounds. You'd have to connect your monitor speakers (or headphones) to your Helix while you're doing that. You can still record dry and wet outputs from the Helix.

    It's not a competition.

Just noticed I was montoring the drums too. Doh.

@stratman3142 great suggestion, doing that too has helped

FWIW a wise man once told me that any solution which involved using ASIO4ALL was almost certainly the wrong solution.

    As a form of update:

I have the helix ASIO now installed and everything works fine......

    In Cubase....

    But not in Reaper....

Can you provide a bit more detail? I might be able to work out the issue you're having with Reaper.

I'll try to narrow it down, as I don't currently use my Helix as my audio interface, but if all else fails I could set things up that way (which would be a bit of a pain).

Do you hear the drum midi track playing back in Reaper?

Update: I just tried setting up my Helix LT as my interface for my computer but after a short while get a BSoD crash, so something isn't playing nice on my system. It used to work OK, but now I'm a bit stumped.

I've got it working on my laptop.

Reaper is set up as follows under Options > Preferences > Device

Right click on the track Record button and check Monitor Input is off (i.e. no tick against it). Because I can already hear the sound directly from the Helix

Select the track input as 'Stereo' and select 'Input 1 + Input 2' for the processed sound

Select the track input as 'Mono' and select 'Input 7' for the dry sound.

    It's not a competition.
