    You have already had a lot of suggestions regarding the interface, so I won’t muddy the waters there (though minimising latency should be a primary consideration).  Regarding speakers: You’re at an early stage, so I would recommend working with a decent pair of closed-back headphones to start off with, until you get the hang of everything else, because you can get decent cans for a fraction of the cost of good monitors, and you can work with the headphones while you learn all the other stuff.  When, and if, you have found your way you can then consider whether to splurge on some good monitors (eg Genelec).
    in the meantime, decide on a budget and then look for headphones by Beyer, AKG or Sennheiser.

    Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 here - it has direct monitoring (most worth the description have it) - with a Mac you have the additional option of Apogee gear.
    Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

    That looks good. I’ll check that one out too. So many options though not sure what I’d actually need at this stage :(

    how are you going to amplify the guitar in the first place? If you mic it up you need an interface, but if you want to use a modeller some of them already have a built-in one (HX Stomp for example) and you won't need a separate interface

    I plan to add sounds etc in the program I.e. GarageBand. Go in as clean initially

    Why would you need 3 interfaces just out of interest @PolarityMan ;

    @Jalapeno its looking like this is what I’ll be going for. However, I have read through some reviews (not all) that there may be some latency. I don’t think it’ll be a big problem for me but thought I’d ask you your opinion? I think the Air button seems a bit of a gimmick I mean I can’t really hear a difference on the YouTube demo’s I’ve seen but that maybe because it’s YouTube etc

    I have a Scarlett 18i20 in the band PA rack then my original jk.e interface was a saffire pro 40. I forth Aly after 12 years the FireWire connectivity got a bit ropey and unreliable so for home use I've got a Scarlett 18i8 which I can connect to the saffire for an additional 8 channels all via USB.

  • Im wanting to go down the road of home recording. I have the software and computer but need a decent capturing device and some speakers. Anyone got any recommendations of such items? Also anything else I’d need ?
    I have had several audio interfaces over the years. I bought a Behringer UMC204HD earlier this year. I expected it to be rubbish, but I've started using it instead of my digital mixer now because it delivers everything I need on a small footprint.

    Before I buy the a new one does anyone have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Gen 3 the heavy to move on?

     Ah just realised that the software might be registered to the original owner and I'm gonna need those too so maybe not possible to transfer etc :(

  • Sorry just one more thing. Does a certain microphone suit this type of recording more or a standard mic will do?

    I ask as I do already have a bulk standard mic which I could use but I won't be doing much vocals in the way of lead vocals at least i.e. just backing etc. Otherwise I could get the bundle that's available to buy with the included mic etc?

    Yes but 2-3ms of latency is acceptable- once it gets up around 10ms you have to play around it or find another solution (like hardware monitoring.

    Mics are a deep topic but start with what you have and see how you go.
    Good quality condenser microphones start at a couple off hundred quid and go up to costing as much as a car.
