Complete mistake - I had dyed the wood dark brown before deciding to spray. The dye has bled through every layer of nitro I applied over it ... luckily it works for the relic effect ...

Your different flower pattern looks amazing, I think I agree that it's better than the original.

I’ve refinished many guitars in this style. I use fabric doing decoupage. 

It’s real easy. On a bare wood instrument just put on a layer of mod podge (liquid acrylic) then the fabric then more mod podge. Leave to set and lacquer as normal. 

Because fabric is a little thick you sometimes have to sand away the edges so they are smooth (it’s basically acrylic now though) and I use a coloured lacquer to hide the joins just like fender did to create a burst effect. 

Sadly I have no pics of my work as I haven’t done it for a few years now. I’ve used the same technique on pedals and amps too.

Sprayed nitro burst and then clear over the vinyl
