  • Thinline or Tele Deluxe with HBs?
    I do like a Shawbucker.

    I'd suggest a Pacifica 611.

P90 neck, splittable HB bridge, trem or hardtail, excellent build quality and more or less on budget.
It's definitely NOT a Les Paul.
It seems like a wonderfully versatile guitar.

^ This. I’ve got one. Very versatile and some different tones.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

    I like those Revstars.
Never tried one but I like their look and spec.

I tried one once.  Heavy and dead sounding.  You might find another one made out of better wood though.  Chris Buck seems to make a Revstar sound pretty good.

Best bang for you buck would be either a used 2020 Epiphone "Inspired By Gibson" range SG (either the Special if you fancy P90s, or the '61 reissue if you prefer humbuckers), leaving loads of money left over for a major pickup upgrade and a thorough set-up with any other minor hardware upgrades that might be needed.

Damn you for reminding me that these exist!

Chris Buck could make elastic bands stretched around a shoebox sound pretty good.

Don't talk politics and don't throw stones. Your royal highnesses.

An epiphany in a casino? That’s one for Gamblers Anonymous.

The Inspired By Gibson ES335 Has definitely caught my eye @Wazmeister but no one has any in stock, sadly.

Why are these demos mostly heavy rock themed riffs and compositions? It would be nice to hear something a little bit more mellow for a change.I doubt all electric guitar owners want to blow the windows from their homes,a few granted but not everybody.

Sheraton with Stormy Mondays and a complete refit and expensive rewire.  Nothing original except the wooden bits. And in excellent condition.  With a case.

A lot of great stuff in that bracket, would recommend (not sure where you are based) going to a big store and trying stuff out to narrow your search.

Bloomfield and Page were not wrong Tele and a Les Paul - because the Les Paul is a like a Tele on Steroids
Try a new Epiphone 60's standard the neck is slimmer - for the record I'm far more a Tele man and used to love the look of Les Pauls but didn't get on with them - I do now

I have had a decent set up on the Epiphone other than that mine is stock and it roars - I use the same amp settings for my Tele and LP both sound awesome but do something quite different.

Failing that PRS SE - I prefer 22 fret so Custom/Standard depending on budget. Try a Santana mine is great and looks fab no coil twiddly rubbish either ;)

And me I have a very on/off relationship with my SG but a Pelham blue special definitely gets the GAS going for me! P90s are great in an SG - keep thinking I need to try the Oil City Critical Mass in mine!

For something completely different how about a PRS Vela? It's offset, has unique pickups and the necks on them are perfect. Come in satin with dot inlays too, definitely one of the cooler PRS guitars. Should come in just under budget if buying used.

The satin PRS S2s are some of the best feeling necks I've ever played.  I had the Vela for a while, but it was a casualty of me trying to get the number of electric guitars I own down to a more sensible number.

  • A lot of folk on here rave about the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster as being amazing for the money, and I was a very happy JM owner before. I believe they have P90s but not clear on the specs: what’s the deal with P90s compared to Tele single coils? Are they generally hotter as a rule, or... ?

How about an Epi 339? I've had mine a few years now and it's still the best neck I've ever played.

    https://www.andertons.co.uk/epiphone-es-339-natural

The model on sale now has slightly different electronics specs but the neck and body are the same. Awesome guitar, and not just awesome for the money.

  • Thanks for all of your suggestions. I think, now that I can, I'm going to just have to try some out. I'm very wedded to Teles, though, so chances are I'll come home empty handed, but you never know...
