The best homemade bug trap that attracts to lights (most night bugs are), is getting a washing up bucket, fill it with water and place it directly under the light in the room.

The bug either gets attracted to the light in the ceiling or the bucket.  50/50 chance they will hit the water, leave it long enough, they eventually will all go towards the water.

Something I picked up living in HK.

Do they then do the washing up? Sounds like a win win

Most common UK horseflies are evil little brown jobbies.
Are you sure you are describing horseflies & not flesh flies (Sarcophagidae)?

Yes, that’s the ones. Thought they were horseflies.

Sitting at my laptop working, listening to Human Fly by The Cramps.

Huge bluebottle just buzzed my peripheral vision. Scared the living crap out of me - frickin' bastard...
