Might be worth considering Vintage brand in that price range, I have the V52 blackguard Tele type and it's fantastic, well within budget too.

I would also not discount the G&L Tribute range. I have one which cost less than £300 and it's fantastic.

Cheers, that's probably what he'll do. It appears he's much more picky when it comes to guitar finishes than I am
