@EricTheWeary  ;; thanks for pointing this out. I have re done the links in different browsers & looks like I have to do all 3 together or the last one knocks the others off if I save in between, Anyway the Savages vid seems there now.

Edit- no it isn't because I took out the two dud links... bet the one below has gone too. Calling it a night...

    Buffalo Tom

  • @historyisjunk ooh I didn’t realise one was The Leather Nun - one of the sounds of my misspent youth.

Sorry but I forget how to embed YT vids and usually mess them up....

But here's some I like that kind of fit the brief.

Husker Du - Plans I Make from the New Day Rising album.

For Vernon Reid, the unhinged solo on Times Up. It's a bit less 'traditional' in structure to the 'Cult of Personality' solo, even though that is surely his defining moment.

Thin White Rope  - It's OK or Some Velvet Morning

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Afro (WTF was that? haha)

John Frusciante's one note solo on RHCP Power of Equality

Swans - where to start? Maybe with The Seer

Derek Bailey was fucking incredible. Essentially invented a completely new idiom on guitar.

    Chuck in some Daisy Chainsaw.

Didn't really do solos as such but they are pretty noisy.

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

  • I think Satriani does a perfect job in this track with just the right amount of crazyness mixed in with regular playing

Pete Cosey all over Miles Davis' 'Agharta'.

He first lets rip from 11:23 and it's glorious.

The best solos are those that add something to the theme of the song or take the song somewhere else.  A solo for the sake of a solo is pointless really.

I always remember when I first heard the solo to Suicide Solution (live version, don't think I've ever heard the studio recording) I thought it was a load of mindless noise and guitar wankery - which was exactly the point.

It wasn't until years later that it occurred to me that Randy was conveying what it was like to be completely drunk with a guitar solo - quite mind blowing really.

As for noise solos, this one springs to mind - it is just noise, but again it works with the theme of the song.

    Solo starts about 3:30

Not really noise, more just some dissonance but still with melody. Just rediscovered this band, great heavy 90s sound.

I somehow missed this thread earlier.

Seven pages and no-one has yet said (although a couple of mentions for John Cale and Lou Reed independently)...

    Sister Ray

... or the Jesus And Mary Chain.
