    Quite possibly, or the shape of the tip. I have a pointy one (very technical I know) for most stuff and a wedge shaped one that works well on pots as the contact area is greater.

    Or even a stubbornly dirty/dry tip. Another good thing about having a separate tin of flux is you can dip the tip of your iron in to clean it. 

    I generally use a round tip with a flat face on one side. Never got on with pointy ones.

    That's exactly what I do.  I have a small tin containing some of that copper spiral swarf for twisting the tip in, but in between that I just dip the tip into my tub of old flux to freshen it.  The flux in the tub does get manky though.
