Got my first unfinished body today, sanded it most of the night and just about to order some bits to try this finish method out.

Should I use grain filler on that knot in between the pickups?

Cool, however total noob I am I just used the whole pack of sandpaper I had of 240, 600, 800 and 1200 all dry. Bollocks. At least I had a fun 3 or 4 hours tonight!

Should I go back and use a coarse one again before oiling it up?

I would go back to 4-600 grit for the first coat

  • So happy I have found this thread, I had been searching for hours before joining to find out whether Crimson stains and Wudtone dyes are compatible with tru oil, now I know they are... my only question now is... I have a mahogony body I'm preparing..ie sanding, anyone know which grain fillers are compatible with everything? I'd love to do an ebony timbermate grainfiller but we cannot get that here in the Uk, or when we can it is at great cost...any alternatives?

I think Johnstones decorators centres always used to sell the metolux timbermate range at pretty good prices.  Certainly that's where I got my last tubs....

Indeed - if you've still got your domain, host them there, and then at least you can control what happens to them.
