Sad news, he was brilliant, he had so many interesting facts and an incredible knowledge of the game. I think he was as iconic as you can be to football without being one of the great players.

I always think of Motty and Barry Davies as peers, so possibly not the last of that era quite yet, but both of the gentleman were superb commentators who brought something extra to whatever they were commenting on. RIP Motty.

Motty, Bill McClaren, Richie Benaud, Dan Maskell, Peter Aliss - all were the voices of their sport.  If I think about any of those sports, those are the voices I hear in my head.  All gone now.

The best football commentator ever.
When I was a little kid I used to do an impression of him. When I played football with my mates when I was little I'd sometimes do a Motty type commentary. fond memories.

As others have said, he was part of my youth, from when you stayed up to watch MOTD on a Sat night and all matches were played at 3pm on a Sat - So pre-Sky and live matches

That's a real shame. RIP Motty. The job of football commentators has been largely taken over by women it would seem.
