Recommend a small, multitrack USB mixer. Like a Tascam Model 12 but with half the inputs...

A year later and I am still on this quest. Was about to buy an A&H ZEDi10 but discovered that the Aux/FX configuration only outputs in Mono over the USB; and the stereo tracks aren't shown to the USB at all. Very limiting.

I have a new A&H CQ mixer.. absolutely brill purchase for the bands. Records to SD directly or as an interface.  https://www.allen-heath.com/hardware/cq/

but it is not a portastudio, so not for overdubbing, etc. great for gig or live session capture though.

Zoom and Tascam seem to have the best options if looking for more of a studio in a box

I'm increasingly thinking an interface might be a better shout. The Audient ID44 even has effects inserts which is handy!

I had a lot of use out of my Zoom R16, which, despite it's cheap build, filled a lot of uses.
8 inputs / recorded to 8 tracks in Reaper, and also recorded 8 mic inputs to SD card at live sessions.
Acted as a DAW contoller ( which was pretty easy to set up ),
Cheap as chips ( felt it, but audio quality was good enough for me )
Cost £200 second hand, I wanted to replace it with the R24, but then the newer stuff came out, and by this time, the Tascam looked a lot better to me.
Tascam looks a lot better built, and more PRO, and is very tempting, for around £500.

Yep… all inputs, fx, etc. on their own tracks onto SD..  loads straight into DAW.

Or use it as an interface.
