"It's unknown how many drones ships each side holds. It's also unclear how much they cost, but one drone publicised by the Ukrainian government has a price tag of $250,000 (£197,000)."

TWO HUNDRED GRAND??!!

I reckon these arms manufacturers are taking the piss big time.

I reckon I could knock one of those up in no time for no more than £6K - plus explosives.

What do you reckon you could build one for?

Donald Trump needs kicking out of a helicopter

Offset "(Emp) - a little heavy on the hyperbole."

I think you are considering drones as being the same, due to the name.
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or drone) can cost from a couple of hundred quid to several millions.

It's a bit like referring to all multi wheeled road going vehicles as 'cars' & ignoring the difference between a Reliant Robin & a Bugatti Veyron

It might be all the research that goes in to making it unlikely to blow up before the user wants it to.

They need a bigger payload to be effective.  (Unless fear is the target goal)

Silent drive system. Redundant guidance and control plus spares.
yup, 6K before payloads sounds right..,. ;-)
maybe Harley Benton could make them.

Arms dealer - Dear Sir Lancelot de Vilier MP, how much will you pay us per remote bomb?

SLdV - Ah, Arms Dealer, my very good friend and co-owner of said business via umbrella company, we would be happy to pay us, sorry, I mean you £200,000 per bomb. Sound fair?

AD - Seems fair, a ha ha ha

A car, mass produced in the millions, even a run of the mill no thrills can cost £30,000 now for a Toyota.

I can imagine a drone costing 10x that amount.  The people who make it are also in the business to make money.  They are not sold at cost to the US government, or any government.

I've never tried to buy Semtex (or similar explosives) in bulk, but I would guess that a substantial percentage of the price of those floating weapons will be in the actual explosives and detonators.  On top of that the fuckers in the EU would probably charge us double VAT and there would be fucking import duties on top of the price.  Fucking Brexit!

Yes Harley Benton could built it much cheaper, for a basic quality. But they'd use the cheapest courier going and you'd be finding drone bombs in hedges, bins and over the side gate.

Yeah but if you add Raytheon tail-fins to them I bet they'd sound exactly the same.

There is a skill in demolition for placing the correct amount of explosives at the correct location. A big bang against the side of an armoured ship is spectacular but not guaranteed to punch through. A small hollow charge placed correctly will though (tank armour being a case in point). With a small boat buffeted by sea and defensive fire the chances become a lot less so the right design is essential. I don’t think £6k is going to cover it.

I think that may be a long time coming. We haven't had 26 pages of the "What detonator for a drone boat?" thread yet

Just change the explosives and they'd be as good as the proper military ones ...

My thoughts exactly, the tales will become the stuff of fretboard legend. We will be regaled with tales of skirmishes on the boating lake, blowing up those pesky ducks and sneaking up on unsuspecting fishermen.
