Hi all! My name is Austin and I live in LA. I'm pretty new to the world of guitars. Any advice on how to get good fast would be appreciated!

Buy the most expensive guitar you can find and then watch as many youtube videos as you can. It's the modern way.

    Otherwise it's good 'ole practice.

You see lots of YouTube videos advertised as “this one technique saved me 10 years practice” so worth a look. 10 years is a lot.

Yep...but avoid the ones where they're holding up fingers (to reinforce just how many 'hacks' they're giving you) and/or looking surprised/quizzical/etc. in the thumbnail pic.

Hi Austin and welcome to the forum. There are many techniques but all come down to hard work and practice. Only tip I'd give is to use a metronome - start slow and focus on good technique, timing and tone, then set the metronome a tad quicker., etc .repeat until fit for purpose.

Yup. Lessons (from someone who understands your goals) and practice.

Also enjoying the process of learning, rather than fixating on any one specific goal.

  • Hey Austin. Go to Norm’s and ask them for the best guitar to get you good fast. That’ll do it.

    Good to see you, Sherlock.

You must be in on it then. Got nothing better to do today or something? No more guitars to build and spray paint and post about?

Yeah stop looking for shortcuts and put the work in ...I have been the same looking for short cuts or quick ways ...just decide what you want to learn and put the work in with a good teacher

Top tip for beginners is to tune all the strings to E, that way when you practice notes you're learning 6x as fast as normal.    Only real pros use this technique.

Play. Play lots. Everything else is decoration, finer touches, or bullshit. Just play lots.

Watch some Ben Higgins videos on YouTube
Then get some of his courses like badass alternate picking, legato gym , etc
Practice different things in 20 minute slots ,have a rest in between
Learn the major scale in 3 notes per string and caged shapes
Practice going up & down it in intervals eg 3rds 5ths 6ths 7ths
Learn a few basic sequences for ascending & descending scales
Try picking out melody lines in songs ,eg the vocal lines .
Learn basic rhythms for whatever style you like blues /rock / pop/metal
Learn open & barre chords  hotel California is good for this as it has two barre chords that follow each other . Some eagles songs are fun to learn .

think about what you want to play or achieve & practice some of the above
all info about the above can be found on the web / on here / on YouTube
do a little practice every day ,even if it’s just 10 minutes but focus intently for those 10 minutes
10 minutes a day is better than 2 hours once or twice a week
Don’t try to do too much though focus on one to 3 things til you can do them good
listen to music you like and get it in your head  think of songs or tracks with solos/instrumentals you can actually hum along to the main theme  & see if you can find the notes by sliding around on the strings .

    Justin sandercoe.

     App, website and YouTube.

I don't have any advice how to  'get good fast.' In fact, more haste, less speed.  ;)

    Especially the bold ones!
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

Invisiblewasp is also new to classical guitar, mandolin, virtual instruments and a string of other forums which he is now spamming with links to the product he is advertising.
