I think that this was a thing of the past, as these days you can easily investigate a band with YouTube, Spotify etc. Back in the day you just had to go for it.
The Proclaimers. I bought their first album on the basis of 'that 'single. I didn't like any of the rest of the album. The Scottish voices wore on me with a whole albums worth! Plus it seemed pretty limited in sound. I can't stand the single now either!
Spacehog. I LOVED the hit single In the meantime. Didn't like the rest of the album at all. The single is still quite cool though.

I'd forgotten about that Spacehog tune until Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Blind Melon needs a bit of perseverance, but there's gold in them there hills!

Edit: Apart from me and other people on this forum, I assume
Thought the single was great, with vocals by Rod Stewart.
Bought the album. ....Sh1t.
Never. Even back in the day I would make sure I heard it first, preferably getting a cassette copy off a mate. Money was in short supply!
Unfortunately the one time I saw them live was when the single was out. Loads of annoying screaming young girls in the audience. At least I could actually see over people's heads for once.
Schizoid man - what a fabulous, energy filled song that is! Great album cover as well.
