I knew he had been very ill again recently following bouts of pneumonia & encephalitis.
A renegade one off that lived life on his own terms. RIP.

Wow, I loved the Pogues when I was 16-18 - saw them live once and had a great time. RIP Shane.

Was hoping it will get back to Xmas no1, but will probably be the idiots singing about sausage rolls again.

Fortunately I believe they've decided to give it a miss this year.

I have a memory of him working behind the counter at Vinyl Solution in Hanway Street. If it wasn't him, then someone else must have been to the same dentist.

    RIP, Shane O'Hooligan.

Although I can't say I was a fan, Fairytale of New York will always be my fave Xmas song - unlike all the 'fun' ones it has real heart and soul.

  • Had the privilege to enjoy a back gig libation with a very personable Shane and the band during 2nd album tour. He was on a pint of Guinness and dry white wine spritzer (with cider) - in the one glass of course.
Many couldn't see past this characterised image and too be fair he didn't exactly play by the rules.
He is however, undoubtedly one of the best songwriters these Islands has produced. RIP Shane.

FINY is the only commercially produced Christmas song I like. The rest are crap.

This is my favourite song of his, The Song With No Name. Have you ever seen lyrics that describe Regret so well as this?

Long years ago I fell in love

With a lady proud and fair

So passionate were she and I

We made fire in the air

I loved her more than life itself

She loved me just the same

    And it broke my heart

To think we'd part if she ended the affair

But I was brutal, I was ignorant

I was cruel I was brash

I never gave a damn about

    The beauty that I smashed

No sadist I, but I took delight

    In making my Love cry

Now I'd pray for a single kiss from her

    To be lashed and crucified

And now I feel this lady fair

    Can never more be mine

Long gone are night in my lonely bed

    All suffering and crying

And though I fear that through this life

    She'll only call me friend

Til I'm dead and buried in my grave

    My Love will never end

Damn... for a while it seemed that he was going to go on like Keith Richards. It's a miracle he got this far, to be honest.

He did leave us with some very fine music though.

    RIP :(

Fact fans - Paul Weller produced his first demos and the single by THE NIPS, (previously known by the name of the Nipple Erectors).

He was mad on The Jam and was a fixture at their early London dates.
