I don't think 'elbow' is necessarily bad technique ref

Also, the 'start slowly' thing...I think it's valid for getting your head around something...but picking motion can change when ramping up the speed (cue the 'you don't learn to run by walking' analogy) so there's a lot of merit in 'starting with speed' (once you know what you're doing).

Disclaimer: I think these concepts are slightly beyond 'beginner' level.
I think if picking motion changes when increasing speed that's the point of starting slowly to familiarise yourself with the range of motion, to the point when you're conscious of exactly how many notes you're playing quickly over a short interval. Yeah, you've got to put some juice in it, I didn't mean pick slowly but rather tremolo pick slowly relative to your bpm goal.

w.r.t picking from the elbow; just to emphasise the point, try tremolo picking from the elbow while moving up and down from the low to high strings, say; e a d a g d for example, or just generally tremolo pick one string with a small range of motion from the elbow and tell me your arm doesn't hurt after 3 seconds
