I wish the crowd was louder to drown all of it out.

I assume Slash hadn't heard the song before.

Plus the appearance of Wolfgang Van Halen (towards the end).

Its less OTT than 90% of GnRs output and 2024 Gosling is a much, much better singer than 2024 Axl Rose.

Not sure what the complaints are about really.

I doubt very much if Slash was actually playing live.
The only stuff at the Oscars that’s live is the nominations and acceptance speaches.

It’s actually a “proper” song, as in a throwback to old school songwriting.

It references a lot of 70s and 80s stuff, in a variety of styles. It has a number key changes and a couple of bridges, things which don’t feature in a lot of today’s music.

Yep.  What Slash was playing didn't appear to bear any relation to what Gosling was (ahem) singing.

Christ, that was painful. Mind you, I find pretty much anything with Slash playing to be painful.

The band at the technical Oscars is live (or there are some session musicians in on a conspiracy) but that’s all the stuff (Best Grip, Best Soundmix type stuff) that isn’t normally shown on TV.

The whole thing just appears random. I had no idea what Mark Ronson was thinking when he invited Slash to do that November Rain solo thing on the original track... I'm even more bemused why Eddie Van Halen's kid is even on it....? I guess you know the right people and get invited to the right parties in Hollywood and this is what results....

Otherwise - love him or loathe him - when mainstream Hollywood needs an easily recognisable to the masses  "guitar hero" - up steps the guy with the Ray-Ban's and top hat. I can't think off the top of my head anybody else in the running from the last 30 or so years of music who fits that bill...

You guys do realise the song and its performance were a tongue in cheek piss take, right?

Slashs improvised guitar work was unmistakably Slash (and very entertaining with it. That’s an achievement 99.9% of us will never make.
