What's the best way to mark something before selling online?

What's Hot
I'll be selling a pair of headphones on eBay this weekend and there's no serial number on it that I can see anywhere.  So I want to mark it with something permanent and tidy that can't be forged to deter potential scammers.  Any suggestions?

People are putting fleas in music gear these days to mark them out.

Carve your name across the headband. Simples.

Super glue it to a head and send it with it?

Traditionally?  Just piss on it at a height that the smell will be impossible not to notice.

Keep it in an extremely smoky environment for a few days.

Why is it that you want to mark the headphones before selling them?
In case a buyer tries to pull a fast one and send back a faulty set of the same make and model number?

If the headphones have removable padded muffs you partially remove one or both and scratch or scribe initials into the plastic or metal where it will be hidden with the muffs on. Either that or dab something like 3 dots of paint or pen of specific colours onto the area normally hidden by the muffs.  They might look like manufacturer's marks but if you have photos of them it would be pretty good proof.  Paint dots wouldn't deter a determined scammer trying to pull a fast one as mentioned above though, because they would probably try and replicate markings on faulty ones.

Break them, then when they send them back you will be sure you are getting the right ones.

All that will happen is you will know for sure you have been scammed, you will still lose out though.

How would it work? You’d get back a pair with no markings and know you’d been scammed but what’s the next step?

I was wondering the same, but didn't want to be the one to ask the question.

You can still "water" mark the pictures by pissing on em. Works for guitars, electronics, car interiors, children's toys, furniture, upholstery, clothes, houses and Exes
Ten years too late and still getting it wrong

Yes precisely for the reason BillDL said. It happened to an acquaintance of mine.  When I sell something online i post photos of serials so if someone sends me back a faulty duplicate, I can take that serial to eBay as proof. But hopefully before it even reaches that stage potential scammers are deterred already. Unfortunately these headphones don't seem to have serial # on it so trying to figure out an alternative way to mark it with something Visible, non removable, and unique.

Can you let us know roughly what type or model of headphones you are selling?
Might help in offering suggestions & solutions.
