I was born on John Lennon's Birthday in 1972.

I guess if there was one of the models Lennon was using at the time it would be appropriate, he was a huge influence on my young life.

I'm no expert on 70's guitars so I'm struggling to think of one now.
One of these then mate - Lennon in concert in 72..

  • I bought and sold a YOB guitar. Shopping by year narrows the choice down to a ridiculous level - that introduces the danger of buying something unsuitable like I did.

The whole YOB thing is a nice idea though so I'm doing it for my kids instead:

    Youngest has a 2015 VOS '63 335

Oldest has nothing yet. Couldn't find anything from 2011 so commissioned a custom Jr with her DOB for the serial. That was nearly a year ago and another story...

1971. D'Aquisto New Yorker. Slightly expensive though and very hard to find.

1986. Either an Ibanez Roadstar (sadly RGs weren't in production) or a MIJ Strat.

1962. I used to fancy a YOB guitar, but anything I'd actually want, would come in at more than I would want to pay for a guitar. It's a nice enough idea, but it's not for me..
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Mine would be 1968 too.  Sadly this is what Google turns up (sad because there's no way!)

Is that a Les Paul Junior Special?
The body thickness, TOM bridge, pickup switch and fret markers look like one, so does the scratchplate but WTF is that neck pickup?
     @TheGuitarWeasel ?

If it is one then yeah ok, I'd have one of them.....
@guitars4you ............what's the damage on something like that these days?

It's a junior with a Charlie Christian pickup added in the neck position (only one vol and tone).  Mind you I wouldn't have wanted to rout for the switch on the top, I'd have put it under the scratchplate.

Incredibly, my main guitar's serial number is my exact birthdate!!!!

Less incredible is the fact that I built it myself and I put the serial number on ....

    Ah, ok cheers for that.

Yeah I'll take one of them then.
    Oh and some fries.

  • 1980 for me so a silverburst Les Paul Custom seems like it would be a good choice to me.

Gibson did a Custom Shop reissue.  You never know, you might find one on eBay.

This thread resurrection has rekindled powerful - sickening even -  feelings of regret that I didn't punt my usual caution into touch, get horribly drunk and buy the '69 SG that @jimmyguitar was selling back in 2014.

If I had, I could have enjoyed it for 5 years and then sold it at a huge profit to some other newly-50-year-old shmuck with more money than  sense.

In the immortal words of Marlon Brando, " I could've been a contender. I could've been somebody"

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder

    My trading feedback  - I'm a good egg  ;)

  • I had a RAT Modified Blackheart amp that was made 3 days after I was born, but 1998 wasn't a great year for guitars.

They still did the J160e in 1972 but they will be expensive. The Casino stopped production in 1970, but you might be able to get a Gretsch 6120 (used on Revolver) . Lennon also played a Sonic Blue Strat, which is probably the easiest to get.

    I'd be after a 1969 Tele, personally....
Flipping this around a minute, I bought a PRS Vela Satin Ltd Edition earlier this year which had a date of manufacture tag on it which said it was completed three days before my birthday.....kinda nice but ultimately pointless ;-)
Made it feel like a really special birthday present, even though I bought it a while after then....
