Multi FX Pedals

Bought myself a nice shiny bit of wood yesterday off a nice bloke on eBay,yay for me. To test it out he plugged it into a Boss GT6 (I think) which I was very impressed with as it was just through some sennheiser hd205 headphones, no amp, which would suit me for playing at night when the kids are in bed. Apparently they're a bit thin on the ground on eBay etc at the mo so I was wondering what else to look out for that's similar.
Ideally budget around £75 as wifey hasn't noticed the new guitar yet, decent range off sounds for me to mess with and needs to work OK without an amp.
I'm a bit clueless in the FX Dept apart from I know Boss are something to do with Roland, so school time starts now I guess

  • You might be able to get a used Zoom G3 for that. I've used a lot of multi fx units via headphones and this is by far the best. Has a specific effect called "air" that makes headphone playing feel much more natural.

Don't discount the Digitech stuff - I loved my RP500.

It had the most "organic" gainy sounds I've heard from a multi fx.

This is available new in your budget.

Has a bit of everything on it.

Depends what you want to do with it though as its only got one foot switch.

You can bank up effects though and then bypass with the A/B parameter.

If you're only after mods/delays/verbs I have heard loads of good things abut this one:

Ok so Zoom looks like an avenue. One thing I noticed about the G3 is that it's also an audio interface so could that replace my USB audio interface I use the hook up to my Mac?

  • Yes, though it only operates at 16bit, so if 24bit is important to you it's not the best audio interface. However it does work very well in that role.

It also has a looper and onboard drums, which makes it an even better headphone practice tool.

Just to point out i don't think you can use the multi stomp ones with headphones. If that's what you're after the G3 is excellent. I like the Bassman and Vibroverb amp models, and have used them through the usb interface for a few Fretboard Challenges now, which is kind of equivalent to headphone playing i guess. Highly recommended, as is the Air effect mentioned above

Ooh and they are tinkerable, i got a great Velvet Underground tone by playing with the active/passive input and removing the cab sim, adding a bit of post comp. Play about with it with your ears and you can get some excellent results
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

Seems like a no brainer for the G3. I'm just noodling around at the mo using a Lexicon Alpha audio interface so it's not crucial.

Thanks for the tip but I think the combination of having it as a USB interface as well is pushing me to the Zoom unless there any other suggestions

    I got the g9.2tt for £80 ish

I would go for one of those.
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

  • More G3 praise:

    • G3 sounds bloody great plugged into stereo speakers
    • Runs for ages on a set of rechargeable AA batteries
    • The "edit and share" PC patch building software is beautifully simple
    • It sounds good in an amp's loop as just an FX box
    • The noise reduction/gate is one of the best I've ever used
