Squier CarnaC Double Neck Project is under way :)

I've had this on the back-burner for quite some time now. The project is to put together a giggable Bass/Guitar double neck to use in my Prog-Folk-Rock outfit CarnaC. Cost is an issue at the moment', that and finding the right donor instruments. I sourced an irresistible GAS bargain Joe Trohman Squier Telecaster after following Niallmo's thread  on this very forum

How did you pass the bodies through the table saw?  Did you make some sort of bodged up guide jig?

And what blade did you use?

And did you need to plane it or was the blade a clean enough cut for gluing?

I did the same with a couple of cheap strats and then flogged it and made another with an ibanez rg570 and a 6270 7 string.   Tis a weighty beast so I don't gig it very often - and the seven string baffles me if I'm not concentrating.

I'm tempted to grab another couple of thomann strats and do another one.    

I'll be very interested to follow your progress on this one, looks like it should be very cool

My brother works at a school and has access to the workshops (He's trained to use all the big stuff, H&S etc) so we put them through one of these...

I attached each body to a sheet of 6mm plywood with double sided tape and then passed them through a table saw against a guide. Because the blade is very precise the cut was as almost perfect and the body halves matched beautifully.

Today I did some sculpting to better blend the curves where the bodies join. I set to work with various curved and round files and no small amount of elbow grease..

I also reattached the necks and restrung both to check alignment, balance and weight. So far it weighing in at 10lb 12oz, I've played Les Pauls that weigh as much.

Thomann do a padded gigbag which is a possibility If it doesn't fit an Epiphone double neck case then I'll settle for the Thomann jobbie or order a custom built one?

Argh, this thread is bad news - you're making it look too easy, and making me think I should really give it a go! (Although the tricky bit might be persuading my brother to give up his highly paid IT consultancy to go and work in a school workshop instead.)

I bloody love it that in 2015 sourcing a gig bag for a custom built double neck is actually viable !

is there a practical reason to have the bass bit above the guitar bit? Instinctively, I'd have done it the other way around but that may just prove my complete ignorance (if proof was needed).

I have an ongoing project that is bass on top and 12 string below... and loads of people said the same thing to me.

shergold doublenecks tend to be guitar on top, rics tend to be bass on top... but i think you do see some rics the other way round

You can never say never with Rics, but I suspect the only factory-built double-necks they've done have had the bass on top, and all the others are cut-and-shut jobs.

Certainly one famous "Ric" double neck was the one Mike Rutherford had built from two separate instruments, and there have definitely been some other instruments created as copies of that one.

Personally I'd go for (and am going for!) guitar on top, but I guess it depends on your style of playing, both for guitar and for bass. Eg, I can't see Mark King having one with the bass neck below the guitar neck!
