Recommend me some new/different "progressive" rock/metal bands?

I am already quite into...
- RUSH
- Dream Theater
- Spock's Beard
- The Tea Party
- Porcupine Tree
- Yes
- recent Opeth stuff

Recently, I've got into, but haven't yet purchased...
- Flying Colours

The sound can be more modern. :D
I don't like screaming :(
I don't love depressing :( but I can deal with it if it's part of an album, but wouldn't wanna listen to a whole album of mellow yellow! :P
Oh and I don't really call bands like Nightwish progressive. They sit on the "symphonic metal" side for me!

And I can't stomach Pink Floyd :D

Queensryche most specifially the MindCrime album.

There is one to avoid, the American Soldier, it's not good, rest of their output is though.

Ringleader of the Cambridge cartel, pedal champ and king of the dirt boxes (down to 21)

I'll second Steve Rothery. My mate, the rather excellent Dave Foster plays on the latest album - he's a great player....

Ahh yeah I used to be into Tool. I mean. I suppose, I still am. But I preferred seeing them live playing a range of their stuff rather than listening to a whole album. 10,000 Days was my favourite of what I listened to. :)

  • I was going to make a couple of recommendations but instead, I'll report you for going against the church of Pink Floyd.

Not many will agree with this but I would say primus... Off the wall, amazing band, for full on prog: the Mars volta, old school: the pretty things, 3amazingly original bands there but of course if you want to go really silly, listen to some gong:-)

Amplifier. Great band, latest (Mystoria) is really good. Older stuff is more proggy though (Octopus is great).
Astra. American band, very Floyd/Crimson 70's style.
Haken. British, DreamTheater/Gentle Giant, all sorts of stuff going on there.
    Leprous. Norwegian, very technical.

I've always been an old progger at heart. There is one band that I have really gotten into over the past year - Big Big Train. Their double album English Electric Full Power is one of my favourite records, and one of my favourite ever guitar solos is on their track Master of time (from a different album).

Also, long runners IQ have produced some really good stuff over the years, as have Pendragon (if you can live with the slightly sub par vocals).

  • Camel (of Snow Goose fame). Not "new" but damn good.
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

You may want to check out his own band 'Mr So and So' as well.

Dave's not only amazingly talented - he's a really lovely guy.

  • Brave and Afraid of Sunlight are my two favourite Marillion albums from the 1990s.

Gordian Knot are great, especially the 1999 album Gordian Knot.

The Steven Wilson album Grace for Drowning is one of the best prog albums of the last 5 years I have heard and would recommend it.

an album I really like is Chocolate Kings by PFM.

early to mid 70's Genesis is great too

early to mid 70's King Crimson is very cool.. very dissonant and intense

play every note as if it were your first
