  • for older prog I'd highly recommend Camel. the drummer from my covers band toured with them in the 90's and he got me in to them in a big way. I'm currently doing some work with the rather talented Colin Bass on his new album too. Although its not prog, it'll be worth a listen once its released :)

Another vote for Pure Reason Revolution from the more recent stuff

Oldies, but goodies (and VERY prog)

    Jethro Tull (early -mid 70s)
Ooh I own a copy of JT's "Aqualung", how did I forget that???

What other albums would you recommend? The little pack of 5 studio albums is always floating around in the shops over here.
    I'd highly recommend...

    Thick as a Brick
    Minstrel in the Gallery
    Warchild
    Living in the Past

    All from the "classic" era

Less proggy, but still great are

    Heavy Horses
    Songs from the Wood
    Broadsword and the Beast
J Tull dot com (surprisingly good given the awful title!)
    Crest of a Knave

For a great sampler of the early to mid 70s era the live album Bursting Out is hard to beat.

Aqualung, however, is pretty much as good as it gets so if you like that you've already peaked.

  • One of the best - yet rather unsung - bands of recent times is "Mystery".  A canadian band that don't seem to get out much, but record great stuff; "Beneath The Veil Of Winter's Face" is the place to start.

From the eighties there are two pairs of solo albums you really have to hear - Cozy Powell's "Tilt" and "Over The Top" Albums not at all what you'd expect going in...  Bernie Marsden's pair from that era "About Time Too" and "Look At Men Now" are similaily good.  All four use the cream of the era's players and sit somewhere between, prog, blues, jazz and straight up rock depending on the track.
