Maybe if Grant & Naylor are going to write it it could be ok - but often these comebacks are doomed to failure, simply because the audience has changed. What was funny then, isn't always funny now. I hope to be proved wrong!

I loved Red Dwarf up to series 6.  The series with Kochanski were okay but she was annoying as hell (still fancied Chloe Annett though) and the rest of the crew had just turned into horrible parodies of themselves.  The specials and mini series 9 were awful and I've still not seen the series the did for Dave (Red Dwarf X?) but from what I've read it was worse than anything that had preceded it.

I might catch up on it all and watch the new series but I'm really not sure I can muster any enthusiasm for it any more.
I quite liked Red Dwarf X.  It was a lot better than the Back to Earth mini-series.  Like I said above, not as consistently good as the old ones, but a lot better than most of the rubbish on these days.

Very true. I can't believe I used to find Monty Python or anything with John Cleese funny.

I think Red Dwarf X was aware that the audience was likely to be a bit older than before, and was written accordingly.

I was never really into Monty Python but the films were good.  Faulty towers is comedy genius though, John Cleese's best work IMO and has stood the test of time.

I just can't stand Cleese, he's so up his own arse it defies physics and biology.
Even the sound of his voice brings me out in hives.

Orginally Jerome K Jerome wrote Three Men in a Boat and it was quite funny.
Then it got updated to 3 men in a bathtub on wheels on a hill AKA Last of the Summer Wine
Which got turned into 3 yorkshire stereotypes in an inverted bathtub AKA the goodies
Which got commercialised into 3 men in 3 magnesium alloy bathtubs on wheels on a flat circuit. AKA Top Gear
Which got turned into 3 men in a 3 mile long magnesium alloy mining bathtub in space AKA Red Dwarf.
At one point it was 4 men in a bobsleigh in Jamaica but that was a step too far.

A sig-nat-eur? What am I meant to use this for ffs?! Is this thing recording?

    I have.
Has had moments of brilliance- the "Maaaaaaaaaaagh" joke last week had me in stitches.

    Yes. I'm enjoying it.

Its not up to the best of series 3 -5 but it's way better than the god awful 7.

    The Krysis episode was brilliant.

    I love season 7.

Yeah I'm quite enjoying it too.  The series seems to have warmed up as it's gone on.  I look forwad to each episode on a Thursday now.

  • I was lucky enough to go to the filming of the last episode of series XI, and in person it was the funniest one i've seen of this series, though who knows what the edit will do to it.

The last episode was the first one i'd seen of the new series. Quite enjoyed it. Surprised they had not covered the midlife crisis idea before, but it was nice to hear from the universe at last
