Alvin Brothers.  All the bases covered in one.  Check out the latest one - Common Ground

If you like a bit of Americana/alt-country style stuff also check out Rodney Crowell - pretty much any album contains some fabulous songs and really ace playing.  Early work is very country and latest is much more Americana - standouts are Diamonds & Dirt, Tarpaper Sky and The Outsider.

Glossary. Deeply obscure but brilliant Americana.

I have an EllPee on the Yazoo label entitled Guitar Wizards 1926-1935. Artists I recall from that compilation are Carl Martin, and Tampa Red. If you like Robert Johnson you might like these.
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)

Play a lot of Rodney Crowell on my Show, not so keen on Dave Alvin though. Try Irene Kelly, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hayes Carll, and dig out some old Freddie King!

Thank you everybody! Sorry been away from the thread for a while, but i am thinking of getting Spotify and adding a load of these bands into a new playlist on shuffle, then just letting it run and see what grabs me

I am on spotify, and my band does playlists that we send to each other that we can all add or remove songs from, to form set lists of songs we want to do. Brilliant for discovering new artists.

Have only just discovered Beth Hart.

Sings this one to an audience of appreciative guitars.

Brendan Benson - great power pop songwriter

David Ford - fucking genius (and an antidote to 'polite' singer-songwriters!)

The Cardigans album 'Long Gone Before Daylight' - not a fan of the band generally but this is an amazing album!

Bernard Fanning - Powderfinger frontman - 2 great solo albums

As a bit of an update, I've added most of the above artists to a "new music" playlist on Spotify, some interesting listening in there. Few comments on some of them so far, though I've not listened to them all enough to fully say of course

Hound Dog Taylor - brilliant, just brilliant. I can say no more

Beth Hart - Seems I've already heard her, on a Joe Bonamassa cd my dad insisted on having on in his car for weeks on end, I didn't really like her on that, her own stuff not really my thing either.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - I feel like I should like this but it just won't sit right with me. Guitar sounds are ok but all the recordings sound so dry, like what things sound like if you record direct to something without any room ambience whatsoever. I'm not keen on his voice either, I prefer higher register voices I think, and without the twang (that Beth Hart also seemed to have, a snarly twang)

Rodney Crowell - heard this kind of stuff a lot from my country loving uncle, not really doing it for me though he is a very good player

Black Angels - only one of theirs has come up on shuffle but it was awesome, very dirty sounding guitars but also ambient, a real good atmosphere going on

    Circulus - they seem fun

Django Django - no thanks, bit synthy and like advert music for me

North Mississippi Allstars - sounds cool, very Seasick Steve but I won't hold that against them haha nice background music, again quite fun

Will keep going though as I'm determined to find something new (to me) that I like.

Velvet Underground & Lou Reed in general...

They're not exactly a new band, but if you love VU/Reed, there's an extremely good chance you'll love Yo La Tengo.  Start with the
I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One LP from '97 and lose yourself in their back catalogue.
