I know some of these have already been mentioned but my picks are:

Skid Row - Skid Row / Slave To The Grind
    Danger Danger - Screw It!
Dokken - Back For The Attack
Def Leppard - Hysteria / Pyromania
    TNT - TNT / Intuition
    Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid
    White Lion - Pride
    Lion - Dangerous Attraction

Out of those my recommendations would be Lion's Dangerous Attraction (Doug Aldrich on guitar!), Danger Danger  Screw It, TNT's album TNT, and Def Leppard's Hysteria.

Love/Hate 'Blackout in the Red Room'  is also really good imo.
    Very much this :)

Poison's 'Open up and say aah' is I think probably their best album.

And it's not hair metal, but seeing it was the same time period (and is awesome) Aerosmith's 'Pump' :)
Stonevibe: 'The best things in life aren't things'.

Trading feedback: Previous (+18) and Current

Does the MTV version of Whitesnake count as hair metal....I reckon so.

Not strictly hair metal, but it's the right era and it's bloody awesome.

    Correct
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

  • Some of these might be pushing the definition a bit but..

Bad English, Blue Murder, Cats in Boots, Dirty White Boy, Edguy, Giant, Helloween, L.A.Guns, Kiss of the Gypsy, Loudness, Lynch Mob, Magnum, Mr.Big,  Puddle of Mudd, Racer X, Saraya, Savatage, Shark Island, Shout, Steelheart, Tyketto,, Unruly Child, Vixen and XYZ would stand you in good stead.

What a great era.. I was more into the nwobhm bands but there was some killer guitar playing on those records. All those pink Kramers and Jacksons :)

God, reading through this whole thread again I've got albums by about 95% of all the bands mentioned....

Wisdom to @demonoid_gnome for mentioning Saraya, their two albums are brilliant and have stood the test of time better than most of this stuff.

Maybe a bit earlier than true Hair Metal.

and this, later 80's with a fantastic intro.

Y&T's classic era albums are incredible. A cut above most hair metal bands.
All of Queensryche's albums up to Empire are brilliant.
Not quite hair metal perhaps but Riots first pre split albums are beyond amazing, whilst Thundersteel is like JP's Painkiller with better songs.

Yeah, I think they started tailing off after Mean Streak.  Earthshaker is phenomenal.

Man, now I want to go listen to Operation Mind Crime again.  Incredible album.

Do Racer X count or are they too shred?

Superheros is a blistering guitar album, released outside peak hair era but has that hair cheese element throughout.

Their early stuff was more hair metal though.  A Judas Priest cover but one of my favourite riffs of all time.
