Great Solos by Session Guitarists

How about a thread where people point out great playing by session players? Not just solos, can be rhythm stuff too.

Post a vid and who the player is if you can.

Here's one to start off, Dann Huff.......solo about 2 mins in.

To be honest, you could list everything Steve Lukather has ever done, but I like the outstanding solo on Lionel Richie's "Running With the Night" at 4:30 here:

You could also pick out his solo on Olivia Newton-John's "Physical". He was amazing on Earth, Wind and Fire's "Back on the Road". Most people have been listening to "Luke" for all their lives, just haven't realised it!

The Steely Dan stuff is amazing but see if we can pick out some more "mainstream" songs with great guitar by session guys.

The Lukather one is a great example!

Heard 'Silent Running' by Mike & the Mechanics on the radio & thought 'great guitar solo, bet that's not Mike Rutherford, I wonder if it's Lukather?' Turns out not, it's another Alan Murphy one! Starts at 3:22 and there's another brief blast at 4:50

Here's the contender that sprang instantly to mind when I saw the thread title:- Gone are the days when the Nashville Christian soft-rock producers took off all the rough edges in a syrup of synclavier-generated backing-vocal pads, then at the last minute called Dan Huff and said "Give us 20 seconds of whammy-bar-mangling at 2:15 climaxing with a bar of septuplet alternate picking at 2:38 as we swoop up into the key-change." To get the full effect I suggest you listen from the chorus before the solo, starting at 1:50.

Ready for the next masterpiece from the Huffster? Take an Amy Grant gospel/pop song with a plodding melody, a horrible drum sound, and a meandering middle-eight, but follow it up at 2:23 with a taptastic 15-second splurge of a cameo from DH, with a one-in-a-million pinch-harmonic at 2:30. Again, to get the contrast properly I suggest listening from the second chorus at 1:50

He was all over recordings in the 80's.

I like Skunk Baxter's solo in Hot Stuff (Donna Summer). My other fave Session players are Paul Jackson Jr, Nile Rodgers, Bruce Gaitsch, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather and Alan Murphy.

Too many recordings for all of them to narrow down to specific favourites.

Royal Philharmonic did an album of Rush tracks. Red Barchetta features an absolute killer solo from Adrian Smith. From 4.30

Well said @jalapeno .......not a Carps fan but the Peluso solo is one of the most tasteful and musical uses of fuzz ever
