What is the point of OPERA?

Went to see La Traviata last week.

Whole bloody thing was in Italian. Couldn't understand a word of it.

Then last night I went to Die Fledermaus. Don't speak any German. 100% gibberish.

What a pointless artform opera is, eh?

It helps if you have an understanding of the plot in advance.

The only thing I object to are twats who bring along the score and sit there reading it while the is on.

@octatonic my tongue was definitely in my cheek for the OP. You probably need to read the Rap thread ;-)

Cannot agree with the OP I'm afraid, if you find out the story in advance the music, singing and stage craft (done well) can be a life affirming thing.

It's a good night out too if you do it properly.

When I read the title I thought you were talking about the web browser Opera - to which I think the question is equally applicable! :)

Cutting-edge multimodal features and competitive navigation speeds.

And it was the worst version of Carmen that I've ever witnessed.

I don't like opera much. Some composers of operas eg GF Händel wrote what I think is excellent music that is spoiled when the vocals come in. I think the forced style of singing to achieve volume is no longer necessary now that we have discreet sound reinforcement technology, that the level of force applied often makes the vocal sound un-musical, likewise that the huge vibrato often used is also un-musical.

Is it acting or drama to music, or is it music with a bit of acting? Either way, it's not very lifelike, any more than a musical is. Maybe it's not supposed to be lifelike.

It could be entertaining, but the vocals spoil it. Even when it's in English you can't tell what they're singing.

Check this for a sizzlin' performance of leoncavallo's love aria from pagliacci. I think most of you will enjoy it. The way both of them can open up their throats and lungs to full throttle and show just how a voice should really be used. And those looks they give each other at 1:10 and 2:07 ;)

It was the last really great film Dario Argento directed.  He's gone right off the boil since then.

Opera is just a primitive form of musical.

Fat ladies in viking helmets lead directly to Olivia Newton-John in a tight black outfit, so it's all good.

    :)

I'm not generally a fan of either genre to be honest, but this just proves there is some good in every art form ;).
