One of the hardest solos I've ever tried to learn

From 2:00 to 2:35... this ain't your granddad's 12-bar blues solo...

I'm probably 75% of the way there with it - it's super fucking weird. Very fast, some fairly hand-twisting positions and a HELL of a lot of moving around - he darts up and down the neck like a man possessed, it's unbelievable. It's a Ginger Wildheart track but the solo was done by Olga from the Toy Dolls - a fabulous, really interesting, really underrated player.

What I want to know is, how the hell does he come up with this stuff? I've never heard anyone who plays like him, and I can't think of anyone else who would play over a 12-bar blues in this way - his style truly is unique. I can't even get my head around the thought process that would lead you to do this over this progression, but it's fantastic - he's so totally free of "stock licks" and cliches.

The reason it's so hard, I guess, is just because of how alien it is.

I'll put up a video when I'm done, but I may be a while yet...

Nice solo but I hear a LOT of cliches and stock licks in there, which is no bad thing but not sure why you think it's so original ?

Really? I'm not hearing that many, where do you mean?

Maybe the bouncing along one open string thing and some of the arpeggio ideas, but not much else that I can make sense of. Most of it is so weird position-wise that I don't think many other people would think to do it - the bit at 2:12 is particularly weird, at least in the position I've worked it out at. I have no idea how he jumps from low down to really high up so quickly.

Maybe it sounds original to me because of the context - you'd expect box-bound minor pentatonic stuff over this kind of thing normally and there's pretty much none of that.

It's just playing to the chord, like at 2:24 when he plays the lick over the B and then drops it to fit over the A (I'm assuming it's in E by the voicing, I don't have perfect pitch) Then there's loads of nods to other stuff .... all cool but nothing particular original :)

Definitely not, loads of open E and B string.

  • Sounds like pretty stock Rockabilly licks to me, with a rawk guitar sound. R.

I've got almost all of it worked out now. Might tab it out.

Put me in mind of Josh Zee who does a nice hyped up blues meets country thing. Here he is joined onstage by some porn stars. God bless America. =D> [ can't get it to work as a link. :( Anyway, the Mother Truckers Lets All Go to Bed]

  • Top work... Although I completely disagree about the porn stars as a video showing a bevvy of loose women in your bedroom whilst you chose to play guitar instead would have been a level of nerdom I would have had to object to.

I wasn't that moved listening to the first clip, but I appreciated it a lot more watching you play it. Very nice cover by the way. I'm always amazed to see your 'spider' fingers at work. So yeah, a good solo and very well played by your good self. Way beyond me.

Undoubtedly incredibly difficult to play, and there's probably some fancy names for the scales/modes used but ultimately it sounds like electric bagpipes :D
