  • What exactly is the reasoning behind not having a Zendrive there? Insanity

  • surely the Zendrive is still the benchmark fore dumble like pedals?

we all have our favourite tune screamers but would be pretty annoyed to watch an hours round up and find no 808 for reference

  • I've got an Ethos TLE and a Zendrive II.

The Ethos is as good as it gets. The clean channel is heaven itself and the drive channel, once you've set the EQ how you like it, gives you a multitude of quite different and exceptionally usable tones with just a twist of the Gain knob. It handles all types of pickups too ...unlike the Zendrive, which (in my experience) only seems to appreciate humbuckers - but if you're after that smooth Ford/Carlton version of the Dumble sound, any decent bridge H/B-equipped guitar though the clean channel of the Ethos and into the Zen II will get you that tone at 1% of the cost of the real thing.

NB: That signal then goes on to a variety of differently powered amps (6L6, 6V6, EL84 and solid state) and, with a bit of judicious EQ'ing, all of them attain that sound.
Not much of the gear, even less idea.

In a way, yes, and it's pretty odd that they didn't include one. Having said that, the Zendrive does one particular sound well but IMO the Ethos is a far more flexible unit and they somehow managed not to demonstrate that. I really got the feeling that the pair of them were not as familiar with the correct set-up of the pedals as they ought to have been for this sort of shoot-out.
